Eight 5G solution providers join Ofcom and Digital Catapult-led OpenRAN initiative

Eight 5G answer suppliers have joined an OpenRAN initiative led by UK telecoms regulator Ofcom and innovation centre Digital Catapult referred to as SONIC.

The vendor-neutral and interoperable gear OpenRAN delivers is seen as being the answer to disrupting the perceived monopoly held by the massive telecoms distributors—serving to to drive innovation, enhance safety, provide flexibility, and scale back deployment prices.

SONIC (SmartRAN Open Network Interoperability Centre) is a joint programme between Ofcom and Digital Catapult for testing the interoperability and integration of open networking options.

Joe Butler, Chief Technology Officer at Digital Catapult, stated:
