Zomato May Start Delivering Alcohol Soon

Zomato Introduces 'Contactless Dining' for Restaurants
Zomato not too long ago began grocery deliveries in wake of the coronavirus pandemic and now, the corporate is reportedly planning to ship alcohol. As per an unpublished doc submitted to the International Spirits and Wines Association of India (ISWAI) obtained by Reuters, the transfer is to discourage the bizarre crowd in liquor outlets.

For the uninitiated, liquor outlets had been closed on the 25th of March together with different non-essential outlets as India entered a nationwide lockdown. Alcohol shops in some states had been re-opened this week which resulted in an unprecedented demand and other people ended up forming queues outdoors shops to buy and inventory alcohol.

As a step to regulate this, Mumbai revoked alcohol gross sales permissions a few days again, whereas the Delhi authorities began levying a whopping 70 % “special corona fee” along with the retail costs.

Deliveries of alcohol usually are not legally allowed in India and that’s precisely what Zomato desires to alter. “We believe that a technology-enabled home delivery based solution can promote responsible consumption of alcohol,” wrote Mohit Gupta, Zomato’s CEO for meals supply.

The firm reportedly plans to carry the service in areas which can be “relatively less affected by COVID-19”. According to Reuters, the doc was submitted to ISWAI in mid-April.

ISWAI’s govt chairman Amrit Kiran had a optimistic response to the proposal, saying “It is imperative they (states) reduce the load on the retail counter … by encouraging home delivery.”

It is price noting that this isn’t the primary time a supply service has pitched the thought of delivering alcohol. In truth, hyperlocal supply platform Dunzo beforehand had an alcohol supply service, which needed to be shut down resulting from regulatory points.
